    Scholarships from these 20 individual funds are to be awarded to students in financial need and have maintained at least a 3.0 grade point average overall. Plus these students must show interest in the profession, by working with the College in its extracurricular and professional opportunities.

    This scholarship was established by Christy M. King, Class ’09 and is to be awarded to a student entering CSPM of Samuel Merritt University with a with minimum 3.5 GPA and who participates in an SMU club.

ROBERT M. BARNES, DPM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

    Dr. Barnes is a 1936 graduate of the Pennsylvania College.  He has made a great contribution to the profession of  podiatry with his work in sports medicine.  For more than 35 years, Dr. Barnes has trained and treated athletes, especially runners.  He has lectured extensively in the United States and at foreign conferences on podiatric sports medicine, the application of orthotics, and rehabilitative medicine.

    This scholarship is awarded to students entering CSPM of Samuel Merritt University with a 2.8 grade point average or greater, who demonstrate financial need as determined by the Division of Student Affairs.

HEATHER BARTON, ESQ MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

    Each year,  the California Foundation for Excellence in Podiatric Medicine awards scholarships in memory of Heather Barton.  Upon her death, her husband, Mel Barton, DPM, and friends, Simon Lane, DPM, and David Jacobson, DPM, asked friends and colleagues to assist them in endowing a scholarship to remember Heather in perpetuity.

    Mrs. Barton was an attorney and a philanthropist.  She served CCPM as one of the original founders of the Board of Governors of the Foundation.  She served the Foundation as its Chairperson from its inception in 1981 until her death in 1990.  She also served as a member of the College Board of Trustees at CCPM, as the Chair of the Development and Gifts Committee.

    Scholarships are given to a single-parent student, who demonstrates financial need, preferably female, but not totally restricted.  The Division of Student Affairs will recommend the student with the greatest need to receive the awards.

MEL BARTON, DPM SCHOLARSHIP FUND

    This scholarship was established by a unanimous vote of the CaFFE Board of Directors at the 2010 Annual Meeting to honor Dr. Barton for his many years as treasurer and his stewardship of the scholarship program through the years.

    Scholarships are to be based on academic performance with a minimum 3.5 GPA and financial need. Student to have an interest in service to the community and the profession.

TRACY L. BASSO, DPM SCHOLARSHIP FUND

    This scholarship is awarded to students entering CSPM of Samuel Merritt University with a 3.0 grade point average or greater, who demonstrate financial need as determined by the Division of Student Affairs.

BLAINE LABS, INC SCHOLARSHIP FUND

    This scholarship established by Robert Blaine, DPM, CCPM Class ’85.  Designated for (in descending order):  a Black female student, or a black male student, or a Mexican female student, or a Mexican male student demonstrating financial need as determined by the Division of Student Affairs.

ROBERT L. BRENNAN, DPM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

    Robert Brennan is a renown podiatric surgeon.  In the pioneer days of podiatric medicine in the United States.  Dr. Robert Brennan taught many innovative foot procedures.  He was an instructor, lecturer, and author.  He was a leader in podiatric surgical education, both in California and across the United States.

    Dr. Brennan was active for many years in the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.  He retired in Southern California.

    This scholarship is awarded to honor Dr. Brennan.  The awards are granted to students entering CSPM with a 2.8 grade point or better and demonstrated financial need as determined by the Division of Student Affairs.

THEODORE H. CLARKE, DPM SCHOLARSHIP FUND

    Theodore H. Clarke is a 1950 graduate of the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine.  Dr. Clarke is the first African American to hold multiple leadership positions in the profession.  He is a dynamic speaker on practice administration, surgery, and pediatrics.  He has lectured world-wide.

    Dr. Clarke served the podiatric profession as: President, Indiana Podiatric Medical Association; President, American Academy of Podiatric Administration; and President, American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA).

    Dr. Clarke also served as a alternate and delegate to the APMA House of Delegates, a member of the Board of Trustees of Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine and, for many years, as National Chairperson, Podiatry-Political Action Committee.

    This scholarship, honoring Dr. Theodore H. Clarke, is awarded to minority students, as determined by the Division of Student Affairs.

OLIVER FOSTER, DPM SCHOLARSHIP FUND

    This scholarship was established by the CaFFE Board of Directors in honor of Dr. Ollie Foster. He has served the profession well for the past 40 years, and is recognized locally, statewide and nationally. No-one is more deserving and no-one is better loved than Ollie. As individuals we have the opportunity to contribute to a podiatric student scholarship fund established in his honor to be given to a qualifying student at the College of Podiatric Medicine at Western University of Health Sciences.

    This award to be granted to a student as determined by the Division of Student Affairs.

JOHN E. GREEN, DPM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

    This endowed scholarship was established by Donald R. Green, DPM and Richard M. Green, DPM, sons of Dr. John E. Green.  This scholarship is to honor Dr. John E. Green. These awards are granted to students entering CSPM with a minimum 3.0 grade point average and showed advanced academic understanding of surgery and biomechanics and who demonstrated financial need as determined by the Division of Student Affairs.

LAWRENCE HARKLESS, DPM SCHOLARSHIP FUND

    This fund was established by Dr. David Mullens in honor of Lawrence Harkless, DPM.  Scholarships from this fund are designated to benefit students of the College of Podiatric Medicine at the Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona.  The criteria for this scholarship is to be developed by Dr. Harkless.

MORRIS HAAS, DPM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

    This fund was established in memory of Morris Haas, DPM. This award is granted to a student entering CSPM at SMU on the basis of academic excellence and demonstrated financial need as determined by the Division of Student Affairs.

JON HULTMAN, DPM / FRANKLIN KASE, DPM SCHOLARSHIP FUND

    Above average student, 3.0 GPA or better, well rounded student who has an interest in practice management and people skills of practice, and has a need for a scholarship.

EARL G. KAPLAN, DPM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

    This endowed scholarship was established by Richard H. Lanham, Jr., DPM, to honor his surgical mentor.   Dr. Kaplan opened the first hospital in the United States dedicated solely to foot surgery.     The hospital opened in 1956 as Civic General Hospital in Detroit. The first podiatric surgical internship program was instituted. Dr. Kaplan was the residency director for many years. The program has evolved over the years and is now known as the Monsignor Clement Kern Hospital for Special Surgery. For students throughout the nation, it is known as the Kern Residency Program.

    Dr. Kaplan is a founder of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and the American Board of Podiatric Surgery. He is Past President of the Michigan Podiatric Medical Association and the American Podiatric Medical Association. He has also served for many years as the Chairperson of the Podiatry-Political Action Committee of the state of Michigan and on the national level.

    Dr. Lanham asked Dr. K’s boys to aid him in endowing the scholarship on the occasion of Dr. Kaplan being named Man of the Year by the Podiatry Institute of Tucker, Georgia. Dr. Kaplan is retired in Florida.

    Scholarships are awarded to honor Dr. Earl G. Kaplan. The awards are granted to students entering CSPM with a minimum 3.0 grade point average and demonstrated financial need as determined by the Division of Student Affairs.

BURGESS S. KELLY, DPM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

    This scholarship is to honor Dr. Burgess Kelly. These awards are granted to students entering their second year at CSPM, achieved a minimum 2.8 grade point average and demonstrated financial need as determined by the Division of Student Affairs.

    This scholarship is awarded to a female student who is working and going to school and who would concentrate on school totally without outside work with scholarship aide. Above average GPA, and a well rounded student.

    This scholarship is awarded to students entering CSPM of Samuel Merritt University with a 2.8 grade point average or greater, who demonstrate financial need as determined by the Division of Student Affairs.

JOHANNA MEDNICK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

    This scholarship was established by her husband, David Mednick, DPM and Santa Clara Valley Podiatric Medical Society in her memory.

    Johanna’s character and values included lifelong self improvement, education, health and fitness and commitment to family and friends. She was a health care provider herself (a registered dietician and a certified diabetes educator). She was dedicated to her patients and put their health care above all else (i.e.: above the insurance companies and large hospital corporations). She always gave her patients time and personal attention. She left the world a better place due to her caring and her dedication.

    Dr. Mednick asked that this scholarship be given to a student who best reflects Johanna’s values. (Further criteria to be determined by the Division of Student Affairs.)

    Beloved professor at CCPM for many years, Dr. Riess taught anatomy in the Department of Basic Sciences. Dr. Riess is retired and living in San Francisco. This scholarship is to honor Dr. George Riess. This scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate financial need as determined by the Division of Student Affairs.

MERTON ROOT, DPM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

    Along with John H. Weed, DPM, Dr. Merton Root was one of the founders of podiatric biomechanics. Dr. Root is an Emeritus Professor at CCPM, and former Chairman of the Department, noted researcher and author. Dr. Root is retired in Northern California but continues to give one seminar each year to selected biomechanics laboratory owners. Dr. Root continues to assist his son with their private biomechanics laboratory.

    This scholarship is to honor Dr. Merton Root. This scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated the greatest financial need as determined by the Division of Student Affairs.

ROBERT L. RUTHERFORD, DPM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

    For more than 20 years, at CCPM, Dr. Robert Rutherford was professor in the Department of Podiatric Surgery. He served as Chair of the Department and was named Emeritus Professor when he retired. Dr. Rutherford has continued to lecture and gives seminars world-wide.

    Every two years, for the past 14 years, Dr. Rutherford has chaired the Robert L. Rutherford, DPM American Podiatry Technique for foreign graduates  at CCPM.  Chiropodists, podiatrists, and podologists from more than 22 countries have participated in these seminars. Dr. Rutherford is retired in Chico, California, but continues to volunteer as a faculty member at the college.

JOHN N. VENSON, DPM SCHOLARSHIP FUND

    The criteria for awarding this scholarship shall be on the basis of professionalism, academics and need to a third year student. If the scholarship is to be awarded in part on financial need, the applicant’s financial need shall be determined on the basis of all other sources of support, including, but not limited to, parental or spousal support and other available loans, scholarships and other funds.

JOHN H. WEED, DPM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

    In October 1992, Dr. John H. Weed expired of a sudden heart attack. Dr. Weed had been a professor in the Department of Biomechanics for more than 30 years.   Dr. Weed was an outstanding researcher, both as a student and faculty member. Most of the early years of biomechanics research(30 years ago) was performed by Dr. Weed and shared with Drs. Merton Root. William Orien, and Thomas Sgarlato. They continue to write and refine Dr. Weed’s work.

    Dr. Weed was one of the first Diplomates of the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics. He lectured worldwide, but enjoyed his time most with students in the classroom.

    This scholarship is to honor Dr. John H. Weed. The awards are granted to students entering CSPM with a minimum 3.0 grade point average and demonstrated financial need as determined by the Division of Student Affairs.

RUTH WOOD, DPM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

    Now retired in Northern California, Dr. Ruth Wood was a member of the Department of Podiatric Medicine for many years. Dr. Wood was instrumental in teaching CCPM students the joy that a podiatric physician’s car can give, which to the patients translated to instant relief. Dr. Wood was a Founding Member of the American Academy of Podiatry Administration and the CCPM-POD-SIX, and continued to serve as a volunteer many years after her retirement from her private practice.

    This scholarship is to honor Dr. Ruth Wood. The awards are granted to students who have demonstrated financial need as determined by the Division of Student Affairs.

BENNETT ZIER, MD SCHOLARSHIP FUND

    Dr. Bennett Zier has led the Department of Medicine for more than 12 years. He wears many hats at the CSPM, beyond his teaching responsibilities. Dr. Zier is in charge of the Primary Care Clinic and screens students who have student health needs. Dr. Zier is Medical Director of Pacific Coast Hospital and serves on the Medical Executive Committee.

    In 1992-93, the Alumni & Associates of the California College of Podiatric Medicine awarded Dr. Zier the Heather Barton Award for Service to the College.  Dr. Zier resides in San Francisco with his wife and two sons. He enjoys soccer and basketball.

    This scholarship is to honor Dr. Bennett Zier. These award are granted to students entering CSPM with a minimum 2.9 grade point average and demonstrated financial need as determined by the Division of Student Affairs.
